Lead Trainer and Assessor, Marion Stanton
Marion is the lead trainer and assessor for Communication and Learning Enterprises Limited and author of the Cerebral Palsy Handbook which is recommended by SCOPE.
She lectures in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) on an accredited course that is validated by Bolton University and is due to be accredited by Derby University for blended learning.
She was an assessor for the Communication Aid Project (CAP) during its lifetime from 2002 through to 2006. This involved government funding for individual assessments across the UK to establish the AAC needs of school age children who had communication impairment and recommendations in regard to appropriate equipment.
In 1990 she set up a charity to support families and young children with disabilities called PALACE (Play and Learn and Creative Education). Marion qualified as a special needs teacher in 1993 having previously worked in Occupational Therapy, nursing, youth work and housing. In 1998 she set up the charity CASTLE (Communicative and supportive Teaching and Learning Environment). CASTLE offered after school activities and learning support in schools to students with special needs across North London.
Marion has studied the following:
• Language and Communication impairment in children with Anne Locke (Speech and Language Therapist at Sheffield University).
• Language and literature in Social Context (with the Open University).
• Teaching and assessment for pupils who have Specific Learning Difficulties with the Hornsby Centre.
• PEC’s (Picture Exchange Communication) with Pyramid Education,
• AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) with Manchester University.
• Teaching Literacy to children with severe learning difficulties (with Karen Erikson from the University of North Carolina).
• AAC with Dr. Rosemary Crossley at the DEAL Communication Centre, Melbourne Australia.
• BSL (stage 1).
• Disability Equality Training with Disability Equality in Education.
• Conductive Education with the Hornsey Centre.
• Talking Mats with Stirling University.
Marion has delivered seminars and workshops at many local, national and international venues, particularly at Communication Matters, which is the annual symposium for practitioners in AAC in the UK and at ISAAC which is the international society for AAC.
In her work for CandLE she supports mainstream schools and LEA’s throughout the UK to help them to include individual students who experience barriers to learning and communicating. She has also worked extensively with special schools to support them in increasing their use of AAC and delivery of literacy instruction to students with complex needs. Marion took a lead role in CandLE’s recently completed government funded project aimed at supporting schools in the self-assessment of their use of AAC in the curriculum as well as for communication.

Jackie Dearden

Jackie is a senior educational psychologist with Nottingham City Community Educational Psychology Service. She has a strong interest in enhancing communication for all pupils, especially those with severe communication impairments. She has recently completed a research project on how to introduce alternative and augmentative communication strategies including facilitated communication training as a normally available resource in Nottingham City. This was part of a sucessful doctoral research project and was supported by Nottingham University and service managers within the local LEA.

Alan Martin

Born in Liverpool in ’63. Until the age of 31 he had very little help with communication, and felt misunderstood and undervalued. When Alan was 31, friends fundraised to buy his first communication aid.
Alan is now a dance workshop leader, performer and disability issues presenter. His work is now in great demand, as the only AAC using dance leader in the country.
Alan’s effect as a positive role model to young disabled people especially communication aid users is greatly valued.
A campaigner for full social inclusion and the rights of disabled people to be treated with respect and in an equal way, this theme underpins all his work.

Tracy Morvinson

Tracy works at Hope School as their Communication Co-ordinator. She is also the Outreach Co-ordinator for children with physical disabilities for Wigan LEA.

Katie Caryer

Role Model, Katie Caryer
Katie is an AAC user. She is starting out on a varied career mixing drama with disability issues. She occasionally writes for Disability Now after having her own column and is a campaigner for inclusion and the rights of AAC users.
Kathy Loader
Communication and Sensory consultant, Kathy Loader
Has had ten years experience of working in both primary and secondary mainstream and special schools. She has also worked in the local community through the Crossroad respite scheme and in play work with PALACE for All, a charity in North London. In addition to having a foundation degree in Education Kathy has trained in Motor Planning with Bolton University and with ®HANDLE (Holistic Approach to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficiency). She also has experience of Conductive Education and Facilitated Communication Training. Her work includes advocacy for the young person who has communication difficulties.
