Announcing a New Concept in Low Tech Head Pointing!

Head pointing offers a direct access alternative to some young people who cannot use their hands to point. Every AAC assessor should have one of these in their assessment kit. Every school that has pupils who might benefit should have one. We are in discussion with a manufacturer so that this access device can be made widely available.

Introducing the "Our Day" Book -Devised by Marion Stanton
Devised to follow the usual morning routine found in many special schools of "good morning", literacy, break, play, maths then lunch. This little book encourages all learners to fully participate in their day using simple, four to a page, symbol sets. The book works quite differently to other symbol sets by following the routine of the day sequentially sometimes offering communicative choices and at other times offering cognitive choices depending on the point in the day. It helps you teach pupils to anticipate what will happen next as well as providing them with ongoing choice making throughout the day. Even the student who is not yet able to make conscious choices can benefit from error free choice making and exposure to discrimination activities. To add to all this, the layout of the pages is easily tranferred to light or high tech devices once a pupil is felt ready to move on to higher tech access.

Easily adapted to be used with photograhs and large enough selections to work with objects of reference this little book gives you the tools you need to structure your pupil's learning and social communication.
We provide a CD with two different layouts which we call "corners" and "cross pattern". Some pupils mange better with one rather than another of these two layouts. For a little extra cost we can also provide you with either a book or a set of laminated boards that you can begin to use with your pupils immediately.
Cost:
CD with 2 layouts for you to adapt and print out using Power Point. £5 plus P&P.
CD as above with addition of a book or a set of laminated boards in each of the layouts. £15 plus P&P.
CD as above with the addition of a book and a set of laminated boards in each of the layouts. £20 plus P&P.
CandLE is only currently selling our own products but we would like to offer some advice on Light Tech Digital Devices and recommend suppliers.
These are usually lightweight devices with a limited number of options on them. You can record your own voice on to them and the communication aid user presses the option they want to communicate using a voice. It is important to consider the individual needs of the communication aid user when choosing one of these. Some require a lighter touch than others. Some are lighter to carry than others. Some communication aid users need their choices arranging in a square, others in a line. Some can only manage to be accurate with 2 or 4 choices, others can manage 9 or more.
Of the devices below the Libtalkers have the lightest touch requirement. They tend to be activated with the same amount of pressure needed on the keyboard of a typewriter with similar feedback. The 4talk4 requires just a little more pressure and the Go talk 9 a little more still. People who tend to point heavily and who can sustain pressure would go for a device that needed more pressure and those who have very low tone making it difficult for them to apply pressure would choose a device requiring a lighter touch.
Cheap Talks
We have used these devices in assessments for many years as they have a distinctive feedback and sensitivity of pressure that we have not found in any other similar device. They are lightweight and portable and each square has an easy-to-remove quick snap symbol cap to hold and protect words and symbols. They are available from Quality Enabling Devices at:

Don't worry if you can't see the item you want in the catalogue. QED may still be able to provide you with what you require.
