Marion Stanton, PGCE Dip. Ed.(Special) is a special needs teacher trainer and lecturer in AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) and in FCT (Facilitated Communication Training). She has a strong commitment to parents and AAC users having the prime say in the way in which service is delivered to meet their needs. She is director of Communication and Learning Enterprises (CandLE) and works with families, individuals who use or would benefit from AAC, colleges, schools, supported houses trusts, adult services, universities and Local Education Authorities helping them to undersand what is available to support people with complex needs and advising on how develop learning and communication strategies.
Marion is also mother of Dan Stanton who has cerebral palsy and is living independently with the support of three personal assistants now that he has left school. Dan was taught in mainstream school throughout and is an able communicator and writer even though he is not able to speak.
Marion qualified as a special needs teacher in 1991 having previously worked in Occupational Therapy, nursing, youth work and housing. She also the author of The Cerebral Palsy Handbook (which is recommended by SCOPE).
She has studied the following:
Language and Communication impairment in children with Anne Locke (Speech and Language Therapist at Sheffield University).
Teaching and assessment for pupils who have Specific Learning Difficulties with the Hornsby Centre.
PEC’s (Picture Exchange Communication) with Pyramid Education.
AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication) with the ACE Centre.
Teaching Literacy to children with severe learning difficulties (with Karen Erikson from the University of North Carolina)
FCT (Facilitated Communication Training) With Dr. Rosemary Crossley at the DEAL Communication Centre, Melbourne Australia.
BSL (stage 1)
