Motor Planning Training
A 4 Day Course around the needs of an individual pupil.
This course is designed to enable a team of support staff, teachers and others concerned with the needs of an individual pupil who needs Motor Planning Training (MPT) or Facilitated Communication Training (FCT). The course will train them in supporting the student so that they can use this approach to access communication aids and to record their work. When the intitial four day training is complete an arrangement is normally made for ongoing supervision and monitoring of the MPT programme.
DAY 1
10.00 am Introduction to FCT/MPT. Where it originated. Different ways it is practiced internationally. The current position in the UK. The most up to date research.
11.15 Break
11.30 Video examples of people being facilitated at a range of levels and at different steps and discussion.
12.00 Brief overview of the different elements of and FCT/MPT programme.
12.30 Lunch
1.30 Observation of student working with familiar facilitators where possible. If the environment doesn’t work for the student then we will show video of him/her working with facilitators and invite those who currently facilitate to talk about how they developed their skills in the early days. If the student is new to the approach we will carry out an assessment which can be observed by the team in training.
2.30 Plenary session. Questions and answers.

DAY 2
10.00 Neuro motor issues. Presentation and explanation of the 24+ Neuro motor issues and ways they can be accommodated.
11.00 Break
11.15 Discussion about the Neuro motor issues affecting the student specifically.
12.00 Video of a wide range of young people demonstrating neuro motor issues and accommodations.
12.30 Lunch
1.30 Practical session with the student where participants can begin to develop their skill in facilitation with possible input from an older facilitation user (guest) who can demonstrate use of ladder steps, provide practical guidance and demonstrate fading to independence.
3.30 Finish
DAY 3
10.00 The Ladder. Describing the steps you need to take to become a proficient facilitator.
11.00 Break
11.15 Practical activities demonstrating how you can use steps of the ladder to ensure that the curriculum is covered.
12.30 Lunch
1.30 Practical session with the student where participants can begin to develop their skill in facilitation.
3.00 Discussion. Questions and answers.
3.30 Finish
DAY 4
10.00 Equipment and software. A brief overview of the access equipment that the student uses or is advised to use.
11.00 Break
11.15 Record keeping, authorship, validation.
12.30 Lunch
1.30 Practical work with the student using examples from the curriculum as well as communication work with the student with people who are high on the Ladder.
2.30 Discussion around what further support needs staff have to make the student’s experience in education successful.
3.30 Finish
